Didn’t have a chance to put together a proposal for a virtual summer working group or workshop team but still want to be involved? Here are some proposed workshops and working groups that need partners! Ideally, each working group or workshop should have contributors from at least three different ACS institutions. If you are interested in any of these groups, please contact Rachael Curtin (grants@acsouth.edu) no later than Monday, May 16, 2022.
WORKING GROUPS
- Best Practices for Forming and Sustaining Faculty Support Cooperatives. This group, facilitated by Kimberly McArthur, Assistant Professor of Biology at Southwestern University, focuses on faculty well-being. In this working group, we will formulate a set of best practices for forming and sustaining small groups of faculty that focus on uplifting meaningful work, protecting confidentiality, and helping individuals decrease their experience of burnout. This group welcomes up to 7 additional members from faculty from at least two other institutions.
- Trauma Informed Pedagogy: Routes and Resources. This group, facilitated by Toni Jaudon, Associate Professor of English at Hendrix College, proposed to discuss recent scholarship on trauma-informed pedagogy and to curate an online repository of resources for instructors who wish to learn more about these approaches. The workshop will be centered around Janice Carello’s checklist of principles for trauma-informed pedagogy. Toni is currently joined by a professor of anthropology at Rollins College, Rachel Newcomb. This group welcomes up to 6 additional members from faculty or staff from a wide range of ACS institutions who are working on or thinking about trauma-informed pedagogy resources.
- Inclusive Assessment Practices for Flexibility, Rigor, and Equity. This group, facilitated by Libby Gruner, Professor of English, Kylie Korsnack, Educational Developer in the Teaching and Scholarship Hub, and Nicole Maurantonio, Professor of Rhetoric and Communications at the University of Richmond, along with Erika Berroth, Associate Professor of German at Southwestern University, plan to compare and contrast different assessment models through the lens of inclusion and equity, share lessons learned and challenges faced in adopting alternative assessment practices within our own teaching and across disciplinary contexts, and curate a collection of resources, definitions, and practical strategies for learning about alternative assessment practices and for communicating their goals and outcomes to others. Participants will also become familiar with UDL guiding principles. Participants will examine artifacts, such as syllabi, with and without UDL design principles, discuss syllabus and course design principles, and connect those to corresponding department or program goals. An open educational resource offers modules with guided reflections. This group welcomes up to 4 additional members from faculty and/or staff from institutions outside of the University of Richmond.
- Creating a Mentoring Network for Mid-Career and Senior Biochemistry Faculty (mentoring). This group, facilitated by Maha Zewail-Foote at Southwestern University and Corina Maeder at Trinity University, propose to build a community of biochemistry professors at the middle and senior stages of their careers. This working group will create a guide for best practices on starting disciplinary mentoring groups and develop a plan for creating a future sustainable biochemistry mentoring network. This group is open to up to 6 additional faculty members from a wide range of ACS institutions who are mid-career or senior biochemistry professors.
- Diversity Includes Disability (Creating Inclusive Departments). This group, facilitated by Judy Bagley, Director of Student Office for Accessibility Services at Furman University. This working group will create modules that can be used across the various campus. The modules will cover topics such as Ableism and Accessibility, Disability Etiquette, Inclusive Teaching/Activity Planning, and Tip Sheets for Faculty. Judy is joined on this project by Directors at Rhodes College, Centre College, Rollins College, Centenary College, and Trinity University. This group welcomes up to 2 additional members from faculty and/or staff from other institutions.
WORKSHOP DEVELOPMENT and IMPLEMENTATION
- Introduction to Sustainable Development Goals and Changemaker Mindsets: Integrating Social Innovation. This workshop, proposed by Anne Stone, Associate Professor, Department of Communication and Faculty Director and Melissa Nelson, Staff Director at Rollins College will introduce participants to the Sustainable Development Goals and encourage cross-institutional conversation. Through this workshop, participants will understand the mindset of a designer, different levels of changemaking, and the sustainable development goals. Participants will analyze which sustainable development goals are most important and the goal targets that participants may examine further. Participants will evaluate the barriers/pathways to meeting the Goal Target and project ideas for connecting sustainable development goals in curricular or co-curricular programs. They are looking for two additional collaborators from additional campuses who have also done work in the area of Sustainable Development.
- Mentoring and Supporting contingent Faculty: Fostering Inclusive Department Culture and Practices. Proposed by Jana Matthews, Chair of the Department of English, and President of the College of Liberal Arts Faculty and Lucy Littler, Interim Faculty Coordinator for General Education at Rollins College, this workshop aims to develop concrete and innovative solutions to overcome barriers of accessibility and promote a culture of faculty inclusivity. Participants will discuss “What can the unique perspective of adjuncts and VAPs teach us and how can we reimagine simultaneous or sequential multi-institutional work as an asset instead of a liability? How can institutions elevate the stature of non-tenure-track faculty and open up leadership pathways for them?” They are looking for two additional collaborators from additional campuses.
