Syllabus Design: Crafting More Inclusive Learning-Centered Syllabi
Facilitated by Kent Andersen (kanderse@bsc.edu), Barbara Lom (balom@davidson.edu), Kerry Paumi (kerry.paumi@centre.edu), and Betsy Sandlin (bsandlin@sewanee.edu)
In what ways might the syllabus articulate course policies without undermining the invitation to learn and build community? This workshop explores ways to improve syllabi language and structure to extend inclusive, welcoming, and appropriately flexible learning invitations to students. All teaching faculty will find this workshop of use. During this interactive workshop, participants will critically examine sample syllabi to uncover unintended messages and explore ways to craft more inclusive syllabi, including the use of anti-oppression statements, opportunities for students to collaborate on course design, articulation of meaningful course goals, and intentional design for flexibility. Undergraduates (live or pre-recorded) will provide first-hand feedback on how they engage with and respond to syllabi. Workshop slides, handouts, and a bibliography of resources will be available to all.
